چکیده
The antimicrobial activity of fifteen semisynthetic labdane-type diterpenes derived from the two major natural compounds 3 and 4 of the resin "ladano" of Cistus creticus is reported. The chloroethyl carbamidic esters 15 and 20 showed the strongest antimicrobial activity against Gram(+), Gram(-) bacteria and pathogenic fungi.

A copal-8-ol diphosphate synthase from the angiosperm Cistus creticus subsp. creticus is a putative key enzyme for the formation of pharmacologically active, oxygen-containing labdane-type diterpenes.
The resin of Cistus creticus subsp. creticus, a plant native to Crete, is rich in labdane-type diterpenes with significant antimicrobial and cytotoxic activities. The full-length cDNA of a putative diterpene synthase was isolated from a C. creticus trichome cDNA library. The deduced amino acid sequence of this protein is highly similar (59%-70% identical) to type B diterpene synthases from othe...
متن کاملGenus Cistus: a model for exploring labdane-type diterpenes' biosynthesis and a natural source of high value products with biological, aromatic, and pharmacological properties
The family Cistaceae (Angiosperm, Malvales) consists of 8 genera and 180 species, with 5 genera native to the Mediterranean area (Cistus, Fumara, Halimium, Helianthemum, and Tuberaria). Traditionally, a number of Cistus species have been used in Mediterranean folk medicine as herbal tea infusions for healing digestive problems and colds, as extracts for the treatment of diseases, and as fragran...

Cistus creticus ssp. creticus is an indigenous shrub of the Mediterranean area. The glandular trichomes covering its leaf surfaces secrete a resin called "ladanum", which among others contains a number of specific labdane-type diterpenes that exhibit antibacterial and antifungal action as well as in vitro and in vivo cytotoxic and cytostatic activity against human cancer cell lines. In view of ...
متن کاملA chemometric interpopulation study of the essential oils of Cistus creticus L. growing in Crete (Greece).
The chemical composition of the essential oils of twenty-five populations of Cistus creticus subsp. creticus L. from the island of Crete (Greece) and their interpopulation variability were analysed in detail by GC-MS. 142 compounds were identified representing an average of 56.8-89.8% of the oil composition. The components are represented here by homologous series of monoterpenes, oxygenated mo...
متن کاملIsolation of high-quality nucleic acids from Cistus creticus ssp. creticus and other medicinal plants.
Leaves of Cistus creticus ssp. creticus (Cistaceae) EDTA, 1.5% (w/v) sodium dodecyl sulfate, 1% (w/v) secrete several labdane-type diterpenes, which display either cytotoxic activity against a number of human leukemic cell lines or antibacterial and antifungal activity [1,2]. Considering the characteristics and possible future applications of these metabolites it seemed worthwhile to study thei...
